The two-day professional development events included presentations, discussion groups and the sharing of strategies and practices that are working well in the principals’ schools. The experience provided participants with the opportunity to explore in depth how they can best apply the Beat the Odds concepts in their schools.
Beat the Odds is an effective, research-based framework to advance student achievement. It evolved from the findings of the research study “Why Some Schools with Latino Children Beat the Odds … and Others Don’t.”
The BTO research findings show that there is well-founded hope that all schools can significantly increase student achievement. Further, the report indicated that demography is not destiny.
The six Beat the Odds principles, when implemented together, maximize student achievement. By using them as a framework for making daily decisions about their role, work and priorities, educators are more likely to make decisions that improve individual student achievement.
