The Arizona We Want
Arizona Pathways to Prosperity Marks 10 Years of Impact and Leadership
JFF Panel Discussion
Jennifer Hernandez, CFA Regional Project Manager, College and Career Pathways, Northern Arizona, joined the Arizona Mining Association and local high school students for a panel spotlighting a virtual internship opportunity facilitated by CFA and the Work-Based Learning Alliance; CFA team members, Arizona Western, Glendale, and Pima Community College leaders, and other key partners and stakeholders gather at the JFF Fall Institute.

Last month, Center for the Future of Arizona’s (CFA) Arizona Pathways to Prosperity (APTP) joined national partner, Jobs for the Future, at the Fall Pathways Institute — a national convening that brought together education and workforce leaders from across the country to advance the future of college and career pathways. The event, held right here in Arizona, reflected the growing recognition of the powerful work being done across our state to expand opportunities and strengthen long-term economic success.

Drawing on a decade of on-the-ground innovation and impact, APTP shared Arizona’s proven approaches for helping students understand and leverage their strengths, connecting them with meaningful work-based learning, and opening access to virtual internships and high-demand careers. These are strategies shaped by real students, real partnerships, and real results — and they are helping employers statewide connect with the next generation of talent.

Each session underscored how ten years of collaboration with schools, employers, industry partners, and communities statewide has opened doors for Arizona students, while also offering a roadmap for what’s possible when communities work together to create equitable access to opportunity, strengthen local talent pipelines, and build and scale high quality pathways.

Rooted in partnership, evidence, and on-the-ground insights, APTP continues to shape the future of pathways efforts. Over the years, we’ve built tools, models, and resources that empower practitioners to implement and scale what works — now brought together in our comprehensive resource hub for educators, school leaders, and community partners.

2025 Southern Arizona Workforce Leadership Academy Fellows

After nine months of collaboration, supported by the Aspen Institute and Pima Community College, our 2025 Southern Arizona Workforce Leadership Academy Fellows unveiled a set of practical, cross-sector strategies to strengthen the region’s workforce. The Academy brings together leaders from business, education, nonprofit organizations, and local government to work across sectors and tackle shared workforce challenges.

The Fellows’ recommendations focus on enhancing workforce infrastructure and childcare, increasing industry involvement in career exploration, connecting young adults who are not currently in school or working to employment pathways, and scaling proven workforce practices. Designed by and for leaders in Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, and Yuma counties, these actionable solutions reflect a shared commitment to creating more opportunity and building a stronger regional economy.

Community, business, and education leaders across Southern Arizona are encouraged to engage with the Fellows, learn from their insights, and collaborate to bring these strategies to life.
“I now understand how education, workforce, and industry partners can come together to address shared challenges instead of working in silos. I’ve learned to look beyond individual programs and think more intentionally about long-term, systems-level solutions that make opportunities more accessible and equitable.”

Rethinking Infrastructure: Investing in What Connects Arizonans to Opportunity
$1.5 Billion

Estimated annual cost of congestion in metro Phoenix

Infrastructure builds Arizona’s future — from the roads and bridges that connect communities to the systems that help people thrive. Research shows investing in infrastructure delivers some of the highest returns for our economy by improving mobility, lowering household costs, and strengthening the foundations businesses rely on to grow. Beyond transportation, infrastructure encompasses the systems that enable communities to thrive — such as housing that keeps families stable, childcare that allows caregivers to work, and education that prepares the next generation to lead.

WHY IT MATTERS
CFA & Rounds Consulting Group’s Unlocking Potential analysis shows that acting on Arizonans’ shared priorities — from affordable housing and reliable childcare to quality education and transportation — can generate measurable economic gains across every sector. Taking action across this full spectrum of infrastructure creates a stronger workforce, more resilient communities, and lasting prosperity for Arizona.

CFA was proud to support the inaugural Sedona Innovation Summit, hosted by the Sedona Chamber of Commerce and Arizona Talks — a gathering that brought business, government, and community leaders together to think forward about Arizona’s economic future.

Our Chair, President & CEO Dr. Sybil Francis delivered insights from our public opinion research and new economic analysis, giving business leaders a clear, data-driven view of the priorities Arizonans broadly agree on. Her keynote highlighted how acting on these shared priorities can reduce costly barriers to workforce participation, expand the state’s talent pipeline, and create the stability and long-term planning environment businesses need to grow and innovate.

Dr. Francis emphasized how addressing Arizonans’ priorities strengthens the state’s competitiveness and why aligning decisions with what residents want is both a smart business strategy and a sound economic development approach.

We’re honored to bring Arizonans’ voices and insights into statewide conversations that influence the conditions businesses rely on — from workforce availability to community resilience to Arizona’s long-term economic success.
