Health Sciences Digital Lessons - STEMploration
Students learn about careers in the health sciences by taking on the role of health care professionals as they follow the treatment journey of a young person injured in a skateboarding accident. Each lesson below contains the Facilitator Guide resource provides the details and necessary preparation to enable users to complete the lesson. The .zip file contains the SCORM driver and content to be uploaded into a Learning Management System.

This lesson is an introduction to the Allied Health Sciences. In this lesson, students review different possibilities and careers in the health sciences and take a first-person role as a first responder. Students follow the case of a young skateboarder from accident to recovery.

In this lesson, the skateboard accident patient is transported to the Emergency Room. Students take the role of a young allied health professional and complete a lab on respiratory distress that connects body systems and illustrates how labored breathing can impact heart rate. You will also consider whether you might be interested in becoming an EMT.

Discuss a phlebotomist's role with the students. A phlebotomist is a health professional responsible for collecting blood samples from patients. In this lesson, students will learn some basics about blood and explore the career of a phlebotomist and their role in the day-to-day operations of a doctor's office or medical lab.

In this lesson, students take the role of physician assistant who specializes in surgery. In this role, the students will learn how to take care of the skateboard patient as a surgeon. The lesson also discusses how the skin heals and more deeply about the physician assistant career.

This lesson focuses on learning about infections and how they spread. Students will see the role of a healthcare professional in hospitals in protecting themselves and their patients from infection. Students assume the role of sterilization technician, the behind the scenes person in the operating room who works to keep the equipment sterile. They also explore healthcare associated infections and explore the differences between viruses and bacteria.

Biomechanics is the application of the principles of mechanics (physics) to the living body. The body’s skeletomuscular system is comprised of levers that give it mechanical advantage when working with the force of gravity to produce movement. In this lesson, students explore the action of levers and how the body is made up of many levers.

This lesson focuses on emotions that the patient, family, and community members experience in a hospital setting post-accident. To address these emotions as a social worker, students practice active listening and communication skills to de-escalate situations when they become heightened to the point of verging on violence. Note: Many schools have social workers on their campuses; consider partnering with your school social worker to deliver this lesson. They can provide additional information on the different types of careers available to social workers. They may also have additional information on active listening and de-escalation skills and strategies.

In this lesson, students explore the field of epidemiology as a health data analyst at the Centers for Disease Control. The lesson revolves around the example of a skateboarder who is resistant to using helmets when engaging in sports activities that have a risk of violent impact to the head—skating, skiing, and cycling and similar injury prone sports. Students learn the importance of wearing helmets by looking at data on death and injury from not wearing helmets.
