2023 Southern Arizona Workforce Leadership Academy Closes With Actionable Solutions

outhern Arizona Workforce Leadership Academy FellowsFellows present sustainable solutions to improve local and regional challenges at the cohort’s closing event in Tucson.

Congratulations, Southern Arizona Workforce Leadership Academy Fellows! In partnership with the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program (EOP) and Pima Community College, CFA hosted this local academy as part of Aspen Institute’s national network that aims to strengthen, innovate, drive, and sustain workforce strategies that serve workers’ and businesses’ needs better. At the closing of their 10-month fellowship, the cohort of 20 workforce development professionals from across Southern Arizona and from multiple workforce sectors unveiled their innovations and recommendations to benefit Arizona's workforce ecosystem.

The program may have ended, but the impact continues. You can join the effort to create a more united workforce ecosystem and improve the overall economic development of Southern Arizona counties by implementing the Fellow’s recommendations.

Mary Jane Fleck   “The Academy changed my perspective. The impact we've begun here will resonate far beyond our immediate circle, influencing lives and shaping futures in ways we are just beginning to understand.”
- Mary Jane Fleck, Regional Program Manager, Vocational Rehabilitation

Regional Healthcare Workforce Summit & Apprenticeship Accelerator
Yuma Regional Healthcare Workforce Summit speakers capture the attention of educators, industry leaders, and workforce professionals.

Yuma County educators, industry leaders, and workforce professionals joined forces in November to address local healthcare issues at the first-ever Regional Healthcare Workforce Summit & Apprenticeship Accelerator in Yuma.

The Summit, hosted by CFA and Arizona Western Entrepreneurial College, with support from national partner Jobs for the Future, fostered collaboration between educators and employers. It helped launch a new apprenticeship program for high school students to gain work-based learning experiences while continuing their education and a new partnership, overcoming hurdles to creating opportunities for student internships in healthcare.

Arizona Progress Meters Update: Jobs
Assessing Arizona's Economic Resilience: COVID-19 Impact and Recovery To-Date

In April 2020, Arizonans, just like the rest of the nation, were overwhelmed by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting public health measures on the economy. In one month, 320,000 jobs were lost in Arizona alone, causing the unemployment rate to surge from 4.9 percent to over 13 percent. The effects were predominantly seen in the tourism and service industries, collectively making up a substantial portion of Arizona's economy, approximately $20 billion.

Today, there is continued reporting on the state of the national economy. Post-pandemic inflation is recovering from a 40-year high but remains 2 percent above the target set by policymakers. Job and wage growth has remained strong, yet many feel a sense of uncertainty that belies the apparent strength of the economy. In this latest update, we explore how the economy is doing across the state using Arizona Jobs Progress Meter data and insights from CFA's Gallup Arizona Survey.

Did You Know?
Recent Funding Presents Opportunities for Arizona’s Path to Sustainability

Did you know Arizona is set to receive a substantial $6.5 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL)? This funding represents a significant opportunity for Arizona to address environmental and infrastructural priorities of the people who live here. It targets areas important to Arizonans’ quality of life such as road and bridge restoration, ensuring clean air and water, expanding high-speed internet, and more. Importantly, this funding aims to extend equitable benefits to rural communities and historically underserved populations, resonating with Arizonans’ Shared Public Value for the environment and a sustainable future for all:

  • Arizonans agree on a number of sustainable practices that protect our air, land and water, and support a high quality of life for all.
  • And 85 percent of Arizona voters support taking advantage of available federal funding to support investments in drought, resiliency, clean air, energy improvement in rural areas, electric grid resiliency, and forest fire management activities.
