In this lesson, students, as Young Professionals (YPs), explore their personal identity by creating a book about themselves to explore their wants and needs. Students participate in collaborative discussion and, with the facilitation of the teacher, engage in independent content creation of their own All About Me book.

As YPs think about the concepts of wants, needs, and communication through the lens of their own lived experiences, they are also coached in the practical, career-oriented application of these concepts through their discussion with the whole class in synthesis.

YPs explore content that features local service careers, such as health sciences, restaurant and hospitality industry, public safety, etc. YPs also focus on actively shaping the development of the “soft skills” of collaboration, networking, and teamwork in order to examine how those skills promote flourishing and mutually supportive relationships.

Lesson 5 - Self: My Place in the World
Time icon 45-60 mins
Edit icon Center for the Future of Arizona

In this lesson, students, as Young Professionals (YPs), create Identity Maps that explore the assets they gain from their backgrounds and think about how those assets contribute to their empowerment as learners and collaborators.

Knowing how they fit into their world fosters a sense of belonging and promotes confidence in small children. Where a child lives, their family traditions, language, and culture all help them develop their self-image and identity. This rich sense of self and of belonging contributes to the capacity of Young Professionals to perceive themselves as active participants in society as well as efficacious contributors in future professional prospects.
